Walking Netball

Walking Netball sessions are designed to be fun and flexible, and largely follow the same formats as any other netball session, including a warm-up, mini-games and drills followed by a friendly game.

We play outside on the all-weather court and the sessions are led by England Netball trained hosts. There is an annual membership fee of £12.00 to join both the Institute and the Chilwell Institute Netball club. The session fee is £3.00.

Sessions are Wednesdays – 6.15pm to 7.15pm and Thursdays – 1.30pm to 2.30pm

Walking Football

In 2022 we joined forces with Nottingham Bramcote WFC to run sessions for women and men here at CMI every Friday morning and it has been a huge success! Walking football is for anyone who may find the running version a tad tiring or downright exhausting! Having said that WF still raises the pulse rate and is a great way to get fitter, have fun and meet new people.

Most of our participants are over 50 but there are no age limits. You do not have to come to every session – just come when you can. It is £3 per session.

We run two sessions: Women 9.30 – 10.30 and Men 11.00 – 12.00.

WE  PARTICULARLY WANT TO ATTRACT MORE WOMEN TO THE FIRST SESSION. Our “Lionesses” are a great group and they would be delighted to meet new players.

Do not worry about skill levels. Absolute beginners welcome. Everyone fits in and supports each other. It’s all about FUN, FRIENDSHIP, FITNESS & FOOTBALL.

WHY NOT COME ALONG AND TRY IT OUT? YOUR FIRST VISIT IS FREE!

RULES AND BENEFITS OF WALKING FOOTBALL at CMI

  1. Running is off-limits. If both feet are off the ground at the same time, that is running. Free kick.
  2. You can ‘walk’ as fast as you want, so long as one foot is in contact with the ground at all times.
  3. Walking Football is a non-contact sport. Intentional contact by one body with another is a foul.
  4. Tackling is only allowed when the foot touches the ball and not the player so long it is deemed not to be from behind).  The ref to decides if the tackle comes from behind (illegal) or from the side or front (legal).
  5. “Coming together” / unintentional contact is allowed at the discretion of the referee.
  6. All free kicks and dead ball situations are indirect.
  7. A shot at goal directly from a free kick that deflects off a defender or goalkeeper into the goal IS NO GOAL.
  8. The ball must never go over head height. Ref decides head height – usually an average of heights of players.
  9. Deflection above head height by goalkeeper during a save– ball retained by keeper.
  10. No heading the ball. No offsides.
  11. No direct goal can be scored from any  kick-off or any dead ball situation.
  12. All free kicks have defenders 3-metres distant. Attacking players – no limits.
  13. Players may not play the ball whilst grounded.
  14. No slide tackling and slide blocks.
  15. Cornering a player is not permitted – allow opponent to turn.
  16. Playing with recklessly or dangerously intentionally or otherwise is an infringement.
  17. One-step penalty kicks.
  18. No restriction on passing back or out from the goalkeeper.
  19. Zero tolerance on abusive conduct / foul language.

GENERAL

  • Shin pads are advised.
  • At Chilwell Institute we advise dimpled-soled footwear. Flat soles (trainers) can be worn but offer less grip, particularly in damp conditions.  Absolutely no blades or studs to be worn.
  • At CMI the maximum team number is 6.
  • Playing WF is a great way to look after yourself. It keeps you moving and enables you to see friends, get the latest news, discuss all kinds of things and learn from and support each other.
  • WF can be played by any age group but attracts mainly those who are over 50.
  • It’s fine to have mixed-age sessions with both ladies and men so long age and abilities are compatible.
  • WF offers a multitude of health benefits including reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and strokes.
  • It promotes positive changes in postural balance, blood pressure, cholesterol, resting heart rate, blood sugar levels and bone density, all of which are indicators of general good health.
  • WF is an excellent way of staying fit and healthy – studies have shown it can be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension, and it can produce high aerobic activity with marked improvements in fat oxidation and aerobic power.
  • Importantly benefits are felt whilst having fun, which makes people far more likely to exercise rather than perhaps just seeing it as chore.
  • There are also many psychological and mental health advantages to playing WF as participants experience high levels of personal reward and satisfaction.
  • WF gives an often isolated section of the community the chance to become involved in something they really enjoy, make new friends and generally increase their overall quality of life.
